The Best Black History Month Activities Your Kids Will Love
Growing up, every February, my elementary school transformed into an art studio as we celebrated Black History Month. It’s such a great memory to look back on and that tradition ignited my passion for both crafting and black history month activities for kids.
Today I want to share one of my favorite projects for kids – creating silhouette art featuring icons like Martin Luther King Jr using rice and paint. Let’s explore how you can blend creativity with cultural appreciation.

Unveiling Artistic Tributes to Black Influencers
Have you ever considered how art can bring history to life? When I embarked on my latest project, I chose to honor Martin Luther King Jr., a figure whose influence is immeasurable. His leadership in the Civil Rights Movement has left an indelible mark on history. To begin, I researched his contributions with the kids and found a clear image to use as my silhouette design.
Art allows us to bring the stories of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. to life in a unique way.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Watercolor set (including black)
- Drawing paper or card stock
- Paper Towels
- Craft knife or butter knife
- Scissors and glue
- Printed silhouette
- Rice
- Plastic zip bag
- Parchment paper
Creating a Captivating Silhouette
With supplies in hand, I prepared my workspace, ensuring everything was within reach. We painted the rice with black watercolor to create a striking silhouette that pops.
Prepare The Rice
- Start by pouring your desired amount of rice into a ziplock baggie.
- Next, pour your black water paint into the bag of rice.
- Then close the bag, leaving no air inside.
- Next, mix the paint and rice until all the rice is cover with the paint, adding more paint if necessary.
- Finally, pour the colored rice out on Parchment paper, spread thin, and let it dry.
Print the Silhouette
- While the rice is drying, carefully cut the chosen silhouette from the paper.
2. Keep this on hand until needed
Creating the Background
- Using your card stock, add healthy drops of paint to the top of the paper
- Use a napkin to drag and smudge the colors down the page
- Let it dry!
Assembling The Rice Artwork
Precision is key to capturing the essence of your historical figure.
- Place the silhouette on the dried background
- Trace the silhouette with glue
- Fill in the traced silhouette with more glue
- Sprinkle the rice on the glue
- Use the silhouette as a guide to adjust the rice where needed
- Let dry!
Let your art speak about the triumphs and struggles represented in history.
