5 Sports That Are Amazing For Developing Motor Skills In Children



I love crafts and the many benefits they provide for our kiddos, but let’s take take some time to talk about physical activities today. I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine and we discussed how physical activity provides far more benefits for children than just exercise.

Participating in sports at a young age enhances motor skills, coordination, and brain development in critical ways that set children up for future success. Identifying these activities that are both engaging and developmentally enriching can help parents and coaches foster happy, healthy children.


Let’s explore five fantastic sports for developing motor skills in children through whole-body movements. My kids are currently involved in 4 out of 5 on this list!

Motor Skills Development Through Sports


1. Let’s Start With Soccer


Soccer is a fantastic sport for developing motor skills in children who are new to sports. The game’s fast-paced nature requires players to have quick reflexes, agility, and foot-eye coordination. Learning the skills of dribbling the ball, passing, shooting, and maneuvering around opponents helps children improve both their fine motor skills and reaction time. Soccer helps kids develop gross motor skills by running, jumping, and changing directions on the field as well.


To help your child get started with Soccer, you can enroll them in indoor soccer centers where they can play in a controlled environment and focus on enhancing their skills and staying active. We had a great experience with and the kids developed a love for the sport!

From there, your child can reap the benefits of improved fine and gross motor skills while enjoying the thrills of the beautiful game while also forming social relationships and learning about sportsmanship.

2. Basketball


Basketball is another sport that offers great opportunities for developing motor skills in children. This dynamic sport not only improves hand-eye coordination but also enhances overall body control and agility.

This is definitely one I want to add to out schedule to give it a try, eventually. This is all in an effort to find what my kids like the most.


Dribbling the basketball requires players to manipulate the ball with their hands while moving and evading defenders. This action helps children refine their fine motor skills, hand dexterity, and finger coordination. The repetitive nature of dribbling allows children to develop a rhythm and improve their control over the ball.


Furthermore, basketball involves a lot of running and jumping, which helps children improve their gross motor skills. Sprinting up and down the court, changing directions quickly, and jumping to rebound or block shots all enhance overall agility, balance, and strength. Overall, basketball is a fantastic sport for children to develop their motor skills.


3. Swimming

Swimming is one of my favorites for motor development and you can start even at an infant age! This low-impact, non-weight-bearing sport is an excellent workout for the entire body and helps enhance coordination, balance, and overall body control.


Swimming involves various movements and strokes that promote the growth of gross motor and fine skills. Breaststroke, for instance, involves simultaneous arm and leg movements as well as balancing the body in the water. Swimming freestyle, on the other hand, requires coordination between the arms’ alternating movements and the continuous kicking of the legs.

Navigating through water also promotes balance, proprioception, and spatial awareness. These skills involve understanding where the body is in space and how it moves through it, which are essential aspects of motor skill development. By swimming, children can refine their balance, orientation, and overall control over their movements.


Also, swimming is a low-impact sport that can be beneficial for children who have injuries or conditions that limit their participation in other sports. The water’s bouyancy reduces the impact on joints, which can help children engage in physical activity without risking injury or exacerbating their condition.


4. Gymnastics


Gymnastics is a sport that involves a combination of movements, including tumbling, balancing, jumping, and swinging, which promote strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. This is also one of my kid’s favorites.


Gymnastics requires precise control and coordination of the entire body. Children learn to perform movements with grace and precision, improving their fine motor skills and spatial awareness. The emphasis on body alignment, balance, and proper technique helps children develop a keen sense of their body in space.


Overall, gymnastics is an exceptional sport for motor skill development in children. Through tumbling, balancing, swinging, and jumping, children improve their coordination, strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness.


5. Cycling


You don’t have to be a cyclist to cycle! The kids love riding their bikes and it’s great to know that there are soo many benefits.

Cycling is not only a fun outdoor activity but also an excellent sport for improving motor skills in children. Riding a bike helps kids refine their balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. As children pedal and steer, they learn to control their body movements, adjust their balance, and navigate their way through different terrains.

Cycling also enhances strength and endurance while promoting a sense of freedom and independence. Plus, cycling can be a perfect activity to keep your child screen-free and get them busy outdoors.



Engaging children in sports is an effective way to promote the development of motor skills. By participating in activities like soccer, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, and cycling, children can enhance their coordination, balance, agility, and strength.
