17 Kindergarten Sight Word Activities That Make Learning Fun

3.9K Shares

The end of the year holidays have started (my favorite time of year) so we are going full swing with Christmas crafts, but I still like to make sure that we keep up the learning as well ! So a few days ago both my 5 year old and three year old daughter did some fun kindergarten sight word activities that involved matching and and letter sounds too. So I thought I would share!

These activities are also great for preschoolers, but if you have been working on letters and sounds with your toddler, it’s great for them as well. Skyla got some great practice with her words!

I also want to make a point that expose our children to new concepts can be good if we are not expecting perfection. In this case, big brother took the lead, but Skyla was actually able to learn from him. I plan to keep these words up until they are recognizable to my little one, and then we move on to the next.

The set up for this was easy but did take some prep time. It took a few to get all of the supplies prepared and setup so the kids could just enjoy it. So take a look at how we did this pre-k and kindergarten project!

Materials

The Materials were super fun for the Christmas learning activity and the outcome was so adorable! It looked so good that we decided to keep it up and continue to learn from it.

  1. Con-Tact clear adhesive paper or clear adhesive liner ( this is what I used, bought from Walmart pickup :))
  2. Construction Paper. I usually buy three or four bundles at a time because they can be used for sooo many things.

3. Christmas Pom Poms, small buttons, Christmas Stickers, or whatever extra material you like.

4. Stick glue, marker, and scotch tape

5. Scissors

Preparation (20 minutes)

  1. I prepared this activity ahead of time while the kids were playing in another room.
  2. First start with drawing a tree and cutting out all of the trees and ornaments. I drew out one Christmas tree to use as the mold for each additional tree.
  3. Then fold the construction paper multiple times so you can cut multiple trees and circle ornaments at one time. Using the initial tree as guidance, I did 15 trees.
  4. Next write your chosen word on each trees.
  5. Then cut out circles for each letter in the words, and write the letters on the circle paper ornaments.
  6. Now we grab the contact paper. Cut a portion that is large enough to add your desired amount of trees.
  7. Then trace the Christmas trees onto the non-sticky side of the contact paper and write the sight words too. I had to trace 15 trees so this part took to longest.
  8. Next, peel the edges of the contact paper down to expose the sticky side. Attach some scotch tape to the paper with the sticky side up and tape it to the wall or door around the edges of the sheet.
  9. Your little one will then be able to match the sight words and stick them on easily.
  10. Next have them add the ornaments by matching the letters and practicing the words!
  11. And there you have it!

Sight Word Matching, Words, and Spelling

I chose to make a sight word matching sorting activity that included colors by adding little paper ornaments.

This part is certainly open to preference, but I will say my daughter really enjoyed it.

They had a great time 🙂

Hi Kayla, I came back to your post to say thank you for the christmas tree sight word activity. My wife and I had so much fun with our children earlier and also had nice family time with this activity. I had the responsibility of cutting out all of the trees and ornaments. I was not very good at it but it helped because our kids were laughing at it the whole time. 🙂
